The narrative follows a young German widow and a mysterious Frenchman who arrives to pay his respects at her late fiancé's grave.
The Locations
Görlitz portrays the fictional town of Quedlinburg in 1919, captured in a melancholic state, suspended in the director's chosen black-and-white aesthetic. The streets of the historic center, entirely devoid of modern elements, facilitated the seamless reconstruction of the somber, post-WWI atmosphere without the need for extensive set design.
