The Film
Presented at the Berlin Film Festival, the film reconstructs the meeting between Marx and Engels and the birth of the labor movement, from 1844 to the Communist Manifesto of 1848. Directed by Raoul Peck, it was particularly well-received in France, where it sparked debates within student movements.
The Locations
Medieval alleys and historic palaces surrounding the Untermarkt recreate the working-class quarters of 19th-century Paris, Brussels, and London. The baroque facades and interior courtyards of the historic center successfully stood in for three different European capitals within a single city.
