Masterpiece without an author
The monumental historic fresco of Von Donnersmarck.

The Film
Directed by the filmmaker of The Lives of Others, nominated for two Academy Awards in 2019 (Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography, the latter for veteran Caleb Deschanel). Inspired by the life of painter Gerhard Richter, it grossed over 313 million dollars worldwide despite a quiet box office debut in Germany.
The Locations
The historic center of Görlitz recreated Dresden and other German cities of the twentieth century—before, during, and after World War II. Its squares, inner courtyards, and facades served as the backdrop to portray over thirty years of German history, spanning National Socialism, the GDR, and post-reunification Germany.
